The paper provides a brief overview of the history ofecology in Indiasince the beginning of the 20th century, and summarises significantstudies in major areas of research in different parts of the country. Itfinally examines several emerging areas such as Integrative Ecology, EcologicalMonitoring, Ecological Modeling, Ecological Informatics and Sustainability Science,into which ecology is likely to move in future. -- Editor
