The Journal, founded by late Professor R. Misra in 1974, is the official publication of the National Institute of Ecology (NIE) - India's premier professional association devoted to Environmental Conservation through Education, Research and Management. The Journal is multidisciplinary, covering a wide range of topics related to ecology and environmental science. It considers contributions from researchers throughout the world.
With effect from January 2012, the journal will levy page charges for all papers.

Individual subscribers, including Members of the National Institute of Ecology, will have only on-line access. Effective 2013, the institutions will have the option of subscribing either Print or On-line edition or both.
The Journal has a fairly large circulation in many countries other than India though not yet covered by the Institute for Scientific information for determining the Impact Factor.
