The Ministry of Environment & Forests, New Delhi, constitutes an Expert Committee on River Regulation Zone Notification.
The National Institute of Ecology had for the first time in 2001 proposed the need for a River Regulation Zone and the MOEF had agreed to it in the recommendations of the National Workshop on Rivers and Lake Conservation. The intention was included in the proposals for the Tenth Plan by the Planning Commission. The NIE, at the request of the MoEF had prepared a detailed background paper on the subject.
Interestingly, the cause of the RRZ has been advocated by the Civil society actively, especially by Yamuna Jiye Abhiyan citing the NIE's 2002 report. We sincerely hope that the NIE's initiative taken a decade ago, and revived now will soon become a reality for the conservation of rivers in India.
