Abstract

Annually, several billion tonnes of waste is accumulated across the world due to rapid growth of population and increasing population density. Hon’ble PM also stressed during Mann ki Baat 40th and 41st episodes held on January 28, 2018 and February 25, 2018, respectively, on the finite nature of fossil fuels and emphasized the need to switchover to the renewable energy. To tackle these two issues, increase in production of biogas was inevitable, using different waste sources such as crop residues, animal waste, solid waste, industrial waste and food waste. The operation of biogas plants utilizing various streams of waste has reduced the accumulation of waste as well as increased the capacity of waste processing in entire country. This paper provides an overview of biogas production across the globe, available technologies, factors effecting the production of biogas and its advantages and way forward for further sustainability of renewable energy through biogas.
