Abstract

India’s urbanization and population growth have led to an unprecedented increase in waste generation. To tackle the issue, the Hon’ble Prime Minister, has emphasized the need for integrated solid waste management during the 56th and 73rd edition of “Mann Ki Baat” aired on August 25, 2019 and on January 31, 2021 respectively. This strategic approach involves the sustainable management of solid waste and entails waste-to-energy, waste-to-wealth, electricity production from vegetable waste, bio-mining, and campaigns against single-use plastics to make Indian cities clean, pollution-free, and move towards clean energy. This paper provides an overview of solid waste generation, available technologies for management, legal framework, trends, and a case study of an integrated solid waste management facility in Saligao, Goa. It also highlights the significance of recycling waste to achieve the goals of a circular economy through resource recovery optimization and the use of secondary resources.
